Pilgrimage for St Hybald Announcement

ree

The Parish of St Hybald, Scunthorpe is pleased to announce its annual pilgrimage to Hibaldstow on Saturday 20th September.  Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10am in St Hybald's church, by kind permission of the Anglican parish priest. All are welcome - bring and share lunch after the service.  Orthodox clergy who wish to concelebrate should please contact Fr Mihai on 07525 019441.

St Hybald was a 7th century abbot, the pupil and friend of St Chad.  He is known as a great apostle to the Kingdom of Northumbria, and was the abbot of Bardney Abbey until he withdrew in order to become a hermit.  After his repose, he was buried near the church in a village then known as Ceceseg but, by the time of the Norman Conquest, had been renamed Hibaldstow - the Resting-place of Hybald.  A shrine was built over his tomb, but destroyed in the the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century.  In the mid 19th century the ground was cleared for the new building after the old church in Hibaldstow had been destroyed by fire.  Hybald's grave was discovered during this work, and the chancel of the new church was laid above.

The Troparion of St Hybald (Tone 4)

You loved Christ all your life, O blessed one, and longing to work for him as a hermit you struggled by the pools and meadows of Lindsey with good works, prayer and labour. With penitent heart and great love for Christ you worked with missionary zeal for the Lord. Wherefore we cry to you: Pray to the Lord that our labours may be blessed and that our souls may be saved.
