On 14 July 2026, clergy and faithful from across the United Kingdom gathered at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Southampton, to offer their prayers and bid a final farewell to the late Father Alexander Haig.
The funeral service began at 11.00 am and was presided over by His Eminence Archbishop Silouan of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of the British Isles and Ireland.
The church was filled with clergy representing the various Orthodox jurisdictions in the United Kingdom, who came together in a powerful witness of Christian unity and brotherly love. They were joined by Father Alexander’s family, friends, and a large number of parishioners from the Parish of the Twelve Apostles, Eastleigh, where he had faithfully served for many years. Together, they gathered to give thanks to God for his life and ministry and to commend his soul into the loving hands of Christ.
The funeral service was marked by profound prayer, solemnity, and heartfelt love for the departed priest. During the service, His Eminence Metropolitan Silouan delivered a moving homily, reflecting on Father Alexander’s faithful priestly ministry, his love for Christ and His Church, and the hope of the Resurrection, which remains the source of comfort for all who mourn in faith.
Following the service, the clergy and faithful processed to the cemetery, where Father Alexander was laid to rest according to the sacred rites and traditions of the Orthodox Church.
After the burial, all returned to the hall of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Southampton, where a memorial meal was served in memory of Father Alexander. It provided an opportunity for clergy, family, friends, and parishioners to gather in fellowship, share memories, and give thanks to God for a priest whose life was dedicated to serving the Gospel and caring for the people entrusted to him.
The Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of the British Isles and Ireland expresses its sincere gratitude to all the clergy, faithful, and friends who attended the funeral, especially the Dean, clergy, and parishioners of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Southampton, for their generous hospitality and loving support on this solemn occasion.
May the Lord grant rest to the soul of His servant, Father Alexander, in a place of light, a place of green pasture, and a place of refreshment, where all sickness, sorrow, and sighing have fled away. May his memory be eternal.
